The Flu and Children and Youth With Special Health Care Needs
Dear Friends and Family,
Family Voices State Affiliate Organizations (SAOs) and Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2Fs) all across the country have partnered with CDC to collect information from families about their knowledge about flu and CYSHCN.
Now we want to be sure that our families are informed about this critical topic.
Important messages from CDC:
- CYSHCN with neurologic disorders are at increased risk for flu complications, including death.
- CYSHCN with intellectual disabilities are included in this group.
- Most parents depend on their child’s provider for information about the flu.
- Many providers are not aware of the risks of flu complications for children/youth with intellectual disabilities.
Please spread the word about these findings to families in your state. We have created a Media Toolkit with multiple resources to help you do that - http://www.fv-ncfpp.org/activities/flu/flu-media/. You’ll find web buttons, fact sheets, and further detail on the findings. Please disseminate this information widely and let us know if we can help you or if you have any questions.
A webinar recording of last week’s NCFPP call with CDC on this topic is available from the NCFPP home page – http://www.fv-ncfpp.org.

Thanks, as always, for all that you do for families within your state and within our nation.
