As explained in this article from Kaiser Health News, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) has released a plain-English guide to the new the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The book, Understanding Mental Disorders: Your Guide To DSM-5, includes in-depth explanations of risk factors, symptoms and symptom management, treatment options, and success stories, designed to help those with mental health problems, as well as their families, friends, and co-workers. As noted by the APA, the book is intended to help readers recognize symptoms, know when to seek help, and get the right care, thereby helping them to better advocate for themselves. Featured disorders include depression, schizophrenia, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and bipolar disorder.
