Expanding Medicaid Programs in Unconventional Ways
As explained in this blog post, a number of states are considering or in the process of securing federal waivers to expand their Medicaid programs in unconventional ways. Families USA has developed a waiver center to help advocates in states considering or developing a waiver to expand Medicaid. The waiver center provides state-specific updates, a timeline for engagement, and talking points to help advocates get involved in the waiver process early and remain involved through comment periods and implementation; develop strategies to either eliminate or ameliorate harmful state proposals; and craft arguments for challenging or limiting program elements that curb consumer protections, make Medicaid harder for enrollees to use, or make the program less efficient. Advocates and others can use these arguments both during the state legislative or regulatory process and through state and federal comment periods.
