How Pediatricians Can Help Children with Disabilities to Get IDEA Services in School
The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities and Council on School Health recently published The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for Children With Special Educational Needs. The report is intended to educate pediatric health care providers about key components of the most recent version of IDEA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. It provides guidance on how pediatricians can work with families and schools to make sure children get the services they need. The report recommends that pediatricians identify and refer children who ought to qualify for early intervention and special education services and communicate effectively with school-based programs about their patients' needs.
