July 26, 2017

We are all tired of urgent alerts, but there is no doubt that YOU --  the grassroots mobilizers and advocates -- have prevented the current situation around healthcare policy from being much worse.  Remember, we really thought there might be an ACA-repeal bill waiting on the president’s desk on Inauguration Day.  Now the stakes are even greater, with drastic Medicaid cuts on the table as well as ACA repeal.

*** So please drag yourselves to the phones and computers again, just for the next two or three days.  A final vote is expected Thursday or Friday.***

A sample message for your sharing with your network is below.

Background. The situation is very fluid, but at the moment it looks like the ultimate vote will be on a “skinny bill” that at least eliminates the ACA’s individual and employer mandates and its medical device tax.  That bill may not include Medicaid provisions, BUT if the Senate passes anything they can take that bill into a House-Senate conference committee to devise a compromise with the House bill, which likely will include Medicaid caps and cuts.  Therefore…

…the best outcome at this point is to make sure that no bill escapes the Senate.  Below is a sample message for your networks.

Thanks for all you are doing!

We know you are sick of urgent alerts, but there have been many critical points in the health care debate where your calls have definitely made a difference. Within the next day or so, the Senate will be voting on a health care bill.  If you take action again NOW, we may be able to stop this process and save health care coverage for millions of vulnerable people, including children and youth with special health care needs.

So PLEASE, call Senator ____ TODAY at 202-224-3121 [or put in phone number below].  If you can’t get through to that number, call a local office number, which can be found at www.contactingcongress.org.

Here is an example of what to say:

My name is [FULL NAME] and I am a constituent from [YOUR TOWN and STATE]. I urge the Senator to VOTE NO on any version of the health care bill now before the Senate.  The health of tens of millions of vulnerable Americans is on the line, including millions of children with special health care needs.  I care about this because ____.  Examples:

-         I have a child with special health care needs and my family relies on Medicaid to pay her very high medical bills.

-         My child has very high medical expenses, so we need the ACA’s protections from annual and lifetime coverage caps and from very high out-of-pocket health care expenses.

-         I have a grandparent/parent in a nursing home and her care is paid for by Medicaid.

-         I am a nurse paid by the Medicaid program.

-         I am a teacher and my school relies on Medicaid to help pay for speech and other therapies provided to students who need them.

Be sure to leave your name and address if you leave a message. (If you prefer to leave a message, call after hours.)

In addition or instead, you can EASILY send a free fax from https://faxzero.com/fax_senate.phpAttach a picture of your child and family.

AND PLEASE TRY TO GET AT LEAST ONE OTHER PERSON TO CALL TOO, especially if one of their Senators is listed below. (Try a spouse, parent, sibling, cousin, friend, teacher, health care provider.)

Background. On Tuesday the Senate voted to take up a bill that would make drastic changes to the health care system.  A vote is expected Thursday or Friday. At this point it is not clear what exactly they will be voting on, but if the Senate passes ANYTHING, they can take that bill to a conference committee to devise a compromise with the (very bad) bill already passed by the House.  That compromise bill could drastically cut Medicaid and repeal significant portions of the Affordable Care Act.  Anyone who relies on Medicaid (even through a waiver) or has a pre-existing condition is at risk.
