#Giving Tuesday: December 1, 2015

Giving Tuesday

What is Giving Tuesday? Now in its fourth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. It’s a simple idea, fueled by the power of generosity, social media and collaboration. This year, Family Voices is actively participating to help make #GivingTuesday a new tradition. You can help us by spreading the word and donating to Family Voices on December 1st.

Help us give voice to the one-in-five families of children/youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN)

Alejandra and familyYour gift to Family Voices helps us provide information, peer-support, and mentorship to families of children with special needs through our network of family leaders in every state, making a difference to families like Alejandra's:

Alejandra was born with hydranencephaly, a rare condition in which the brain's cerebral hemispheres are absent. Because of the resources provided by South Dakota Parent Connection, the Family Voices State Affiliate, Alejandra participates in pre-school. And, her Mom and Dad have become the strong and knowledgeable advocates that Alejandra needs. Her Mom is now a Registered Nurse with the Indian Health Service, now “paying it back” by referring other families of children with special needs to needed resources.

Will you help pay it back?

Family Voices was founded 23 years ago by families of children/youth with special health care needs who came together with a common passion - to strengthen the voices of families like Alejandra’s, enabling them to partner with providers to improve health care and help their child become as healthy, successful, and independent as possible. Your donation helps us to ensure that there is funding in every state for a family-run Family-to-Family Health Information Center, which provides direct assistance and training to families in their state and provides a grass-roots family perspectives to educate health care programs about the needs of families.

Polly Arango Mentoring InitiativeLast year, donations funded the Polly Arango Mentoring Initiative, a program to develop the leadership skills of families from diverse communities. Polly was Family Voices’ first Executive Director and a driving force in ensuring that Family Voices reaches out to diverse families everywhere. Through this initiative Hispanic and Somali family leaders in four states have received training and support to help families of CYSHCN in their communities. Participant Elodia from Iowa noted the impact of this program:

"The training I received was a great experience. I discovered my feelings and experiences were similar to other parents. I was particularly impressed with the discussion we had about the grief that parents of children with disabilities go through and how important it is to acknowledge that. Having a child with a disability is not something to be afraid of. Spanish-speaking people like to learn and gaining the knowledge to help our children is important to us. These workshops will help me help other families speak up for their children."

Will you help families speak up for children?

Please support our work with family leaders in every state. Your donation will up us mentor, train, and facilitate best practices in family-to-family support and family engagement at the individual and systems level; partner with researchers and stakeholders to share family experiences in order to develop policies that work; and collaborate with professionals to provide timely, critical information to families.
